Gokarna is Karnataka's answer to the question: what if Goa were quieter, more sacred, and still had pristine beaches? This small coastal town on the Arabian Sea is one of the most important Shiva pilgrimage sites in South India — home to the ancient Mahabaleshwar Temple — and simultaneously one of the most beautiful beach destinations on the subcontinent.
Five beaches line the coast — Gokarna beach, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise — each progressively more secluded and spectacular as you walk south. Om Beach, named for its Om-shaped shoreline, is the most famous. It's 490 km from Bangalore but absolutely worth the journey.
Top Places to Visit

Om Beach
The most iconic beach in Gokarna — shaped naturally in the form of the Om symbol when viewed from above. Popular with backpackers, yoga retreats and those seeking a Goa alternative without the crowds.

Half Moon Beach
Accessible only by a 30-minute forest trek from Om Beach or by boat — this secluded cove rewards the effort with crystal-clear water and almost no tourist infrastructure. Camp or stay in simple beach huts.

Mahabaleshwar Temple
One of the most important Shiva temples in South India. Non-Hindus cannot enter the inner sanctum but the temple architecture, carved gateway and sacred tank outside are striking. Remove shoes before approaching.

Kudle Beach
The most accessible of the southern beaches, Kudle is a long sandy arc with guesthouses, yoga studios and beach-facing restaurants. Calmer than Om Beach, it's popular with longer-staying travellers.
Local Tip: Walk the coastal trail from Gokarna beach through Kudle → Om → Half Moon → Paradise for the best overview of all five beaches in a single day. Take plenty of water — the trail is exposed. Boat rides (season: Oct–Mar) are a comfortable alternative.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is peak season — calm seas, sunny weather and ideal beach conditions. The water is clear, boats are running between beaches and the beach shacks are all open.
April–May is warm but quiet. Seas start getting rougher toward May. Good value as crowds thin out.
Monsoon (June–September): Gokarna is beautiful in the rain but dangerous for swimming. Boat services between beaches stop, beach shacks close and many guesthouses shut. Not recommended for beach travel.
How to Reach from Bangalore
Gokarna is 490 km from Bangalore — best approached as a 2-night trip rather than a day trip.
- By cab: NH748 via Shimoga and Sirsi. ~490 km, 8–9 hrs. Comfortable overnight departure or early morning start.
- By train: Gokarna Road station is the nearest railhead (9 km from town). Several overnight trains from Bangalore (Karwar Express, Jan Shatabdi). Journey ~9–10 hrs.
From Gokarna town to the beaches, walking, auto-rickshaws and boat rides are the only options — no cars can park at Om or Half Moon Beach.
